At last night's user group meeting which David Hayden spoke at, we got into an interesting discussion regarding TFS, Subversion, and ultimately TRAC.  My main concern with TRAC was that it wasn't integrated with the IDE where you are able to manage work items quite easily in TFS.

There may be a solution to this problem.

There is a plugin for Visual Studio which integrates TRAC: http://tracexplorer.devjavu.com/?redirectedfrom=WikiStart.  I have not used it myself, but will give it a try when I get home.  I use TFS on my work laptop and Subversion/Ankh/Tortoise for my personal development.  I would like to work using a similar workflow at home - I don't want to leave my development environment to update tickets.  And I like to have the same discipline with my side projects that I have with my 9 to 5 projects.  Hopefully TRAC Explorer will be a good solution.

If your only need is source control, I think that Subversion is a great choice.  However, one must not ignore the TEAM benefits of using TFS.  The cost of VSTS and Team System is usually the objection, but that investment is a smart one for most large teams.  If you have TFS installed and you aren't using the Team features, you might as well be throwing your money away.

I believe that Microsoft should put TFS in the cloud that way the cost makes more sense for small development shops and individual developers.  A pay as you go model would alleviate cost concerns of the smaller outfits.

If you have used TRAC Explorer, please comment below and let us know your experience.

Re: TRAC plugin for Visual Studio 2005 and 2008

Hi Roy,
I just wondering hows things are going so far with TRAC and VS2008 IDE Integration. I'm a Program Manager and I'm pushing SubVersion, CC.Net, Tortoise, AnkhSVN and I just understood how to have TRAC up and running but know I'll like to have TRAC also integrated within VS IDE. Any feedback will be helpfully.

Regards,
Carlos.
