This blog is Roy Lawson's take on technology, community events, and comments on recent user group meetings.

People quite often forget that VSTS and TFS are not just version control systems. Although TFS does version control very well, the real value with VSTS is that it allows the entire team to be integrated.

I haven't spent enough time investigating the best way to write unit tests against the database - I'm sure there are better approaches than mine. What I have done is created unit tests that validate functional requirements of an ETL process. Each unit test is a stored procedure that returns a simple "Pass" or "Fail" in the first row/column and various other information in the other columns, which help identify problems.

Here is a code snippet of what a typical unit test may look like (for me - since I combined the positive and negative scenario). I made the text really small so you have to strain your eyes ;-):

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[1_1_3_FilterOwners]  AS  DECLARE @PositiveCount int --Should be > 0  DECLARE @NegativeCount int --Should be 0 ...

I recently had a problem in TFS that prevented me from adding a new workspace. The problem was that an old workspace existed in the TFS database, however it wasn't in my list of workspaces and my limited knowledge of how to query TFS through the command line made a simple problem difficult. If you haven't had the problem of a "stale" workspace, consider yourself lucky.

The bright side to this problem is that I learned a few key TFS commands. To start from the beginning, when I try to change the path of my workspace to C:\Team instead of C:\TFS I get this error:

The first logical step was to delete that workspace.  However that workspace was not showing up in the list of workspaces assigned to my account from within TFS explorer.  When I query TFS (see screenshot below) I get just one workspace back and it isn't the offending workspace:

As you know the Lakeland .NET User Group has moved our meetings to USF Polytechnic because of rapid growth.  We still have a solid group of experienced members, but we also have attracted more junior and entry level members as a result of the move.  The head of the computer science program is now asking students to attend at least 2 meetings per quarter.  In order to meet this new demand for entry level topics, we would like to put out a call for speakers who are willing to speak on 100/200 level topics related to .NET.

We still have a demand for 300/400 level topics also.  If you are interested please let me know.  We are expecting enough people that we could divide the room and have two speakers (it has a divider) – or we could also do the usual and have one speaker – just depends on who expresses interest.  We are really hoping for a topic that is appealing to a group of people with diverse levels of experience.  I have a speaker for March and April, but nothing beyond that.

Please shoot off...

Joe Healy has successfully shamed me into getting back on the blog bandwagon.  Yes, my lack of blogging and content on the user group site is inexcusable.

A few announcements. . .

I have made major updates to the website.  For one, we are rebranding our user group as the Lakeland .NET User Group.  When I started the user group, I expected 6 people to show up.  Instead we are a group that has outgrown two meeting locations and are now at USF Polytechnic.  Thank you USF!  Our old URL still works, but you can now get to the site by using our new URL: www.lakelandug.net.  And if people can't remember if we are a .NET or .COM, I also have www.lakelandug.com pointing to the same server.

Because of our move to USF Poly, there is a new demand for 100/200 level topics.  I am working on getting speakers who are interested...
